The Process and Technique

…darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God was moving on the waters. And God said “Let there be Light” and there was light
(Genesis 1:2-3)

The whole process of creation is repeated in each icon: from shadow towards light, adding layers and layers of pigment and lines. Out of the dark undercoats (proplasmos) form begins to take shape as the layers of “light” are added. The artist moves with this process towards the light of the finished piece. The saint, or face of Christ or The Virgin Mary seem to reveal themselves as the work progresses towards its conclusion.
